2018-07-18 Spiraea Arrived

Spiraea japonica Magic Carpet was ordered as long ago as 27th April! It arrived yesterday and, with the planter already prepared with some fresh Miracle Gro compost and the Periwinkle (Vinca Minor) trimmed back a little, it was quickly settled into its new home. The photo is just a quick snap on my iPhone, done full zoom from upstairs through my bedroom window so is a bit fuzzy but the vibrancy of the green/yellow/red coloured leaves can be seen. I'll get a better photo later today if I can.

2018-07-19 Spiraea Planting Small

Look how much darker and healthier the Periwinkle leaves are after that treatment of sequestered iron I mentioned. Cutting it back to 4 inches has made it bush out well and there was even one flower earlier this month! I've pinned one runner on the right to the soil in the hope of fresh roots and shoots and will train it right round the edge of the planter. It's trailing so nicely already.

Notice the top of the recycling bin. I managed to find 4 opened pansy seed pods with fully mature seed in whilst dead-heading. They will go in a dark envelope in the fridge for planting next spring. Or I may just sprinkle the seeds on the soil and let them do all the work.

In that shady/windy spot in the past I tried a dwarf rhododendron then Mahonia Soft Caress (two of them!) but bad frosts - especially the Beast From The East - made them poorly. Before the council killed off my front garden I grew Spiraea Anthony Waterer in an exposed position and it survived well. Perhaps Magic Carpet will survive the shade and winds in that corner and thrive. Third time lucky with the plants perhaps. I did give it a little feed as I soaked it in. I don't expect flowers this year so if any arrive it'll be a bonus. Looking forward to watching the changing colours of the leaves. I really wanted an evergreen in that spot and Magic Carpet is deciduous but I'll be happy just to have something that survives in that bad environment. The Periwinkle came through from the front garden as a shoot with only 3 or 4 leaves on and few roots. Nurturing it back to life until it looks this good is an achievement I am proud of. It'll establish itself further into spring when I'm hoping for half a dozen gorgeous purple flowers. It'll survive the frosts; Vinca shrubs are as tough as old boots.

2018-05-23 Late Evening

The badly slug-chewed Polyanthus at the side of the steps are past their best now so if I can I'll use those tubs for the self-seeded pansies that I've dotted around. I've not sat out since last photos. The bird bath needs more water. I'm missing seeing the Weigela flowers and the bees that keep coming back for more.

2018-05-18 Daphne drop and yellow small

Daphne x napolitana 'Bramdean' has some leaf drop and yellowing so I gave it some sequestered iron.

2018-05-18 Cornflower? small

Self-seeded Cornflower nurtured in a big planter has been transplanted to its own pot. My instincts to keep it were right. Not a weed after all. Happy

2018-05-18 Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarosa' small

Blue miniature conifer Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarrosa' looks a bit weather-beaten but should perk up with more sun.

2018-05-18 Euonymus Emerald n Gold sun-yellowed small

Euonymus Emerald n Gold has benefited greatly from all the recent sunshine and is showing lots of lovely yellow leaves as a result.

2018-05-18 Euonymus Emerald n Gold, Pansies small

Self-seeded pansies divided and nurtured in the large planter. I may move them later. Lovely free plants! No knowing what colour they will be!

2018-05-18 Euonymus Harlequin Reverting? small

Euonymus Harlequin should look whiter than this. I spy some reverted dark-green non-variegated leaves which will have to go.

2018-05-18 Hydrangea, Violas, Vinca Major, Weigela Florida small

A few Violas (Pansies) which sprouted from seed in autumn and overwintered in this tub providing great early colour. A photobombing Vinca Major (Periwinkle) and Weigela Florida on the top right. The star of the show will be the Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise' sprouting up in the middle. It looks healthy but closer inspection shows whitefly. Time to get the spray out again.

2018-05-18 Juniperus communis 'Brynhyfryd Gold'' small

Miniature conifer Juniperus communis 'Brynhyfryd Gold'; this bright new yellow growth has been very pretty for a couple of weeks now.

2018-05-18 Lavatera Barnsley Baby, Pansies, White feather small

A Pansies' nursery for now. A white feather! I take that to mean my Dad is watching over the garden and approves. Happy Lavatera Barnsley Baby has been very slow but, at last, there are signs of new leaves in the centre of the picture. It's so hard to believe that it will grow into the giant we saw last year….

2018-05-18 Pieris Little Heath White small

Pieris Little Heath has lost all the pink and is now a gorgeous white.

2018-05-18 Potentilla Red Ace, Pansies, Heather small

Potentilla Red Ace has a flower bud just visible in the centre of the photo. I was a little disappointed to see this start to revert back to yellow last year. I hope the flowers are red, as they should be. Healthy new growth on the Heather Calluna vulgaris 'Dark Beauty'. I gave it a trim after flowering last year. I can't bear to kill any of the free pansies which seeded themselves. Finding places for them all will be difficult!

2018-05-18 Ugni Molinae, English Marigold, Pansies, Cuttings small

Ugni molinae 'Flambeau' has had a tough time because of that Beast From The East. I've already pruned a lot of brown foliage out. New pink growth promising. An English Marigold has self-seeded too! I'll be moving that soon. There are 3 Ugni cuttings shoved into the foreground. They're still alive since last year! I'll pot them on and have 3 free new shrubs! Laugh

2018-05-18 Vinca Minor yellow small

The Vinca Minor (Periwinkle) was trimmed down to about 4" to encourage new growth. I hope we get flowers this year. It's looking a little peaky - yellowy established leaves so, along with the Daphne, it's been given some sequestered iron too.

2018-05-18 Weigela Florida Flower Buds small

The Weigela Florida that lost its 'Variegata' when the council hacked it to the ground years ago is looking ok following its hard pruning after its move from the front garden last year. The flowers aren't as big this year but I fed it with some Tomorite this evening so things should improve. I want the Vinca Major (Periwinkle) to trail down over the edge of the tub but it has other ideas and wants to climb up the middle of the Weigela.

2018-05-18 Weigela Monet Flowers BEST small

I am disappointed at the small amount of flowers on the Weigela Monet but the gorgeous variegated purple foliage more than makes up for it.
